Welcome to Te Kāmata, the library at He Tīwai Mātauranga | Heaton Intermediate

Te Kāmata is a multi-functional learning and library space used by all students at He Tīwai Mātauranga Heaton Normal Intermediate School.

The library consists of a range of areas:
  • Library Central  - the main area for teaching & learning activities. Includes the book collections, tables for group work & a large screen TV.
  • Desktop Den - has desktop computers and the student printer/photocopier.
  • Beanbag Corner - surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows, this is the place to read and relax in the sun.
  • Seminar Rooms (two) - breakout spaces ideal for independent group work.
  • Auditorium - perfect for presentations, book read alouds, speeches, and watching movies! At lunchtimes the Auditorium becomes The Chill Zone - a silent reading sanctuary away from the hubbub of the busy Library Central.

The Librarian | Kaitiaki Kāmata, Mrs Boniface, promotes reading for enjoyment, supports inquiry learning, develops students' research skills, and is responsible for ensuring Te Kāmata is a welcoming and safe space for all.

15 Things To Do in Te Kāmata

  1. Visit the library with your class for any sort of learning activity - but in a much bigger space than your classroom and with extra resources!
  2. Find information on Inquiry topics using relevant and appropriate information resources.
  3. Attend  Research Skills sessions delivered by Mrs Boniface. Learn how to find the best information for your topic, how to evaluate information, how to avoid plagiarising, how to take good notes, and how to create a Reference List.
  4. Find a great book to read. Use the Library Catalogue to see what books, graphic novels, magazines and picture books we have. You can also use the Catalogue to read and write reviews about our books, check your Borrower Record and renew your loans.
  5. Visit the Te Kāmata Books page to access our lists of Top Picks - some of the best books in the Heaton library, grouped by genre.
  6. Ask Mrs Boniface for help with finding information or for a recommendation for a great book.
  7. Borrow some graphic novels or magazines, as well as books.
  8. Catch up on homework during lunchtime.
  9. Come to the library at lunchtimes between 12.45pm to 1.20pm. You can use Library Central at lunchtimes for any "constructive" purpose, including reading, drawing, playing board games or cards, and catching up on school work. You may use one of the desktop computers for schoolwork (not games!) at lunchtime, but you can not use any other device, (phone, laptop or chromebook), anywhere during school beak times.
  10. Read in peace and quiet in the Chill Zone (Auditorium) during lunchtimes. There is no talking in the Chill Zone -  use Library Central if you want to chat.
  11. Use one of the library computers in the Desktop Den area.
  12. Print off your schoolwork using the Student Printer/Photocopier.
  13. Expand your reading horizons by checking out recommended reads and book suggestions on our Read webpage.
  14. Suggest a book for the library to buy - you will find "Book Suggestion" forms at the Issuing Desk.
  15. Take part in book and literacy competitions and events. Read the school's Daily Notices to keep up with what is going on.
