Heaton LRC Digital Citizenship Unit
Heaton teachers, please book your class in for the Digital Citizenship Unit delivered in the LRC by the LRC Coordinator.
The Digital Citizenship unit consists of six 45 minute sessions where students learn how to be "awesome" digital citizens, with a focus on being safe, smart, responsible and kind.
The first session introduces students to the nine elements of Digital Citizenship, as defined by Mike Ribble.
The remaining 5 sessions focus on 5 of the 9 elements: Etiquette; Communication; Health & Wellness; Rights & Responsibilities; and Security. For each element we watch and discuss some relevant YouTube clips, before breaking off into small groups to work on creating a class collage detailing the specific ways we can be awesome digital citizens.
N.B. Digital Literacy is an essential and highly relevant “element”, encompassing anything to do with being a skilled and knowledgeable user of all various apps etc, plus being a smart and ethical researcher. Digital Literacy is not covered in this Digital Citizenship unit however as it would duplicate what is already covered in the LRC Research Skills unit (e.g. search skills, evaluating information, legitimate sources vs fake news, respecting Copyright, how to reuse images ethically with Creative Commons, not plagiarising).

Digizen Game
This game follows on from the cyberbullying film Let's Fight It Together to personalise and reinforce learning from that film. This game allows you to log on to a computer and create your own character that goes into the same school where cyberbullying has taken place.
You have the opportunity to experience a day at school with Joe, the main character, and make decisions about how to help him as he experiences cyberbullying. You are challenged to be a responsible digital citizen and find out more about keeping safe online.
